View of Penthouse terrace before our design

Nicoa’s terrace holds a special place in my heart, as this small, but very impactful project belongs to two very special friends of mine. One of them whom I’ve known since we were 17 years old.

This penthouse terrace located in Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste, had been for many years the gathering place for my friend’s parent’s and family. With a new generation continuing a historic legacy, my clients wanted to reflect a new era.

The impressive views of the Pacific Ocean, the height, and of course, the uniqueness of the jacuzzi as a feature on the rooftop, left very little room for doubt; this space had to be treated as a private beach club. Eventually as the process of design concept developed, the project got affectionately called as "the private Mikonos club”.

The objective consisted of giving the terrace a full aesthetic change, and also cooling the space. For this, I used passive architectural climate strategies. Both roofs were raised in order to provide more natural ventilation and create a more grandiose effect underneath the social area. A new in-built bar & BBQ was created for a more efficient and fluent social dynamic. The jacuzzi was given a new access, and the combination of materials, colors and patters on the floor give a more relaxed and natural atmosphere.
